Walmart has officially opened its $257 million beef-packing and distribution facility in Olathe.
The facility, located at 20200 W. 167th Street, encompasses nearly 331,000 square feet and will be used to package and distribute beef to stores across the Midwest, including all of its 83 retail locations in Kansas. The Olathe Planning Commission approved Walmart’s proposal to build a beef-packing plant in June 2023.
In 2022, Walmart acquired a minority stake in Nebraska-based Sustainable Beef LLC. Sustainable Beef sources its cattle from no more than a 250-mile radius of the plant.
With the addition of the new facility, Walmart is creating over 600 jobs in the Olathe area.
“With over 600 new jobs being created, this facility will fuel local economic growth and reinforce Olathe’s position as a regional agricultural leader,” Olathe Mayor John Bacon said in a release. “We’re proud to work with Walmart and build more economic opportunity for our residents.”
The plant opening marks a major step in Walmart’s mission to deliver high-quality Angus beef and create an end-to-end Angus supply chain for its 600 stores across 14 states.
“Kansas has long been at the forefront of the agriculture industry, and Walmart’s investment in Olathe is further driving our success,” Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said in the release. “Through food production and supply chain innovations, we are proud to partner with Walmart to transform how we feed communities across our state and the region.”
