University of Missouri Health Care data breach exposes patient information

Thousands of patients of MU Health Care have been affected in a recently reported data breach caused by a phishing attack on employee email accounts, the breach leaking the personal information of around 5,000 patients.

A report this past Friday revealed another victim of cyber-attacks, this time the University of Missouri Health Care experiencing a data breach which has leaked patient information for thousands of patients.

The original attack was said to have occurred between May 4 and May 6, reports the Columbia Daily Tribune.

Caused by a phishing attack on employee email accounts, the university found information that had been swiped could include names, birth dates, account numbers, health insurance information and potentially, Social Security and driver’s license numbers.

Not all MU Health Care patients were affected by the breach reports the university, but primarily those who had information contained in the compromised email accounts.

“MU Health Care also recommends patients review any statements they receive from their health insurers or health care providers,” a news release said. “If they see charges for services they did not receive, patients should contact the insurer or provider immediately.”

An estimated 5,074 patients had information leaked in the breach.
