University Health announced it has opened a new state-of-the-art Electrophysiology (EP) Lab.

With the new EP Lab, the hospital can now provide more advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional procedures, including ablations to treat atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

Dr. Michael Giocondo will lead the new lab, bringing 19 years of experience performing EP procedures. Cathy Dunker, the lab’s supervisor, recently joined University Health with 26 years of experience.

“It’s been a long time coming. Our early conversations about the new EP Lab began nearly three years ago. All of us on the team are thrilled that this day has finally arrived,” Cindy Sheets, University Health’s cardiovascular systems director, said in the release.

University Health president and CEO Charlie Shields said this investment represents a leap forward in expanding care at University Health and in our community.

“The greatest benefit of this new EP Lab is what it will mean for our patients. It will allow us to perform a wider range of important procedures that previously required referrals to other hospitals,” Shields said in the release. “Now our patients can receive more of the care they need right here, from this amazing team of providers we all know and trust.”
