Three metro counties noted among most generous in state

By Madison Parry

Jackson, Clay and Platte counties were found to be among the Top 10 most generous counties in the state of Missouri in a recent study. Each was analyzed for how much money people donated as a percentage of their net income and the proportion of people who made charitable donations.

Area counties comprising the Kansas City metro were found to be among the most generous in Missouri, according to a recent study by Smart Asset.

Platte, Jackson and Clay counties were noted among the Top 10 most generous in Missouri, ranking second, seventh and ninth, respectively.

On the Kansas side, Johnson County ranked first in the state. Metro counties following suite in Kansas’ Top 10 were Douglas in fourth and Miami in sixth.

The study looked at two factors in each county to determine the highest generosity: how much money people donate as a percentage of their net income and the proportion of people who made charitable donations.

Calculations for SmartAsset’s study included looking at tax return data and accounting for federal, state and local taxes paid. Also accounted for were deductible entries, mortgage interest, mortgage points and mortgage insurance payments, according to SmartAsset.

Three pieces of data were displayed for each county listed in the Top 10. These were contributions as percentage of income, percentage of returns itemizing charitable contributions and the last was a “Most Generous Places Index.”

In Missouri, Platte County showed 1.90 percent for contributions, 10.18 percent for percentage of returns and a 39.28 on the index.

SmartAsset determined that Jackson County averaged 1.49 percent in contributions, 6.78 percent in returns and 27.66 on the index. For the same, Clay County displayed 1.08 percent, 7.42 percent and 26.58.
