Thermo Fisher in Lenexa opens new site to help increase coronavirus testing

Thermo Fisher Scientific in Kansas recently opened a new Viral Transport Media manufacturing site which is said to assist with Kansas’ COVID-19 testing strategy, helping to increase testing statewide and create over 300 jobs.

In an announcement made by Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly on Friday, the Thermo Fisher Scientific in Lenexa has opened a new site will help increase the amount of statewide testing.

Named the Viral Transport Media manufacturing site, the additional facility was built in just six weeks, according to the governor’s office, and is said to be worth $40 million.

Along with the increase in testing, the new site is expected to create over 300 full-time jobs with an estimated 150 million testing products expected to be produced by the end of the year, according to Thermo Fisher.

“By significantly increasing the manufacturing capacity of this facility, Thermo Fisher will not only have a positive impact on public health, but will help my administration as we work to rebuild our state’s fiscal foundation and make our economy stronger than it has ever been,” Kelly said in a statement Friday.

Kelly attended the official opening of the new facility Friday in a ribbon cutting ceremony, joined by Secretary of Commerce David Toland and other officials.
