The KC Streetcar Southern Expansion Means Big News For UMKC Athletes

The University of Missouri-Kansas City issued Monday a request of proposals for the development of a five-acre parcel next to the streetcar at 51 Street and Brookside Boulevard.

UMKC Chancellor Mauli Agrawal announced the new project could potentially include retail, housing and a 5,000-seat arena for community events.

Furthermore, the arena could most notably be a haven for UMKC Division I basketball and volleyball athletes. The university anticipates the arena could provide 40-45 home games per season, plus 550 practice sessions per season.

“A destination development at the southern terminus of the streetcar is an appropriate addition to the community by UMKC, Kansas City’s university,” Agrawal said Monday following the announcement.

Work on the $350 million, 3.5-mile southern extension of the KC Streetcar started in April 2022, and is expected to complete development in 2025.
