The Roy Blunt Luminary Park project will soon begin its first construction phase, closing Interstate 670 for nearly two years.

Construction for the new green space area over I-670 in downtown Kansas City will begin this December. Phase one of construction will require closing nearby city streets and Interstate 670 until September 2028.

Phase one will establish over 50 percent of the tunnel infrastructure and deliver one full public space at Block One on the western edge near the Convention Center, according to the project’s website.

Block One is part of the park that will reach from Wyandotte St. to Baltimore Ave. and include walking paths, picnic and play areas, art installations, and space for food trucks as well as community events.

The tunnel infrastructure will support the entire project from Broadway Blvd. to Grand Blvd. Additionally, the project will implement six blocks of new pavement and drainage improvements on I-670 from Broadway Blvd. to Grand Blvd.

The entire Roy Blunt Luminary Park project is expected to be completed by spring 2029.

Last month, the Kansas City Council passed an ordinance to commence construction on the park. Prior to that, in April, the Roy Blunt Luminary Park received a $5.1 million grant in partnership with KCMO, the Mallouk Family Foundation and Variety KC. The foundation is led by Veronica and Peter Mallouk, who are the CEO of Overland Park-based wealth management firm Creative Planning. The total funding for the park is nearly $200 million.
