Research Medical Center has named 12-year industry veteran Sam Maxfield as its new chief financial officer.

Kansas City-based Research Medical Center is a 590-bed hospital that is part of the HCA Midwest Health system.

Most recently, he served as CFO for Banner Boswell & Del Webb Medical Centers —two hospitals with 801 combined beds — in Phoenix, Arizona for nearly two years. Before that, he served as CFO for Banner Behavioral Health Hospital for just over a year.

During his tenure at Banner Health, Maxfield generated $3.1 million in labor savings achieved through productivity improvements across both campuses. He grew margins by 17% in 2023 through perioperative and cardiac cath lab growth and contract labor reductions and reduced purchased services, according to a release.

“I look forward to working with this dynamic organization and advancing its tradition of solid financial stewardship and delivering the gold standard of healthcare to patients,” Maxfield said in the release. “I have a strong professional and personal commitment to community-based healthcare. I value the opportunity to become part of the collaborative team of employees and medical staff that is the foundation of one of the area’s most highly regarded hospitals.”

Maxfield earned his bachelor’s degree in accountancy from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and a Master of Science in accountancy from Arizona State University.
