Q&A with Chris Long

Chairman/CEO/Portfolio Manager/Co-Owner, Palmer Square Capital Chris Long

Q: What do you consider your organization’s most significant achievement or highlight over the past year?

"Our view that rates will stay higher for longer is, in part, based on our view that the macro picture looks resilient. The labor market is as strong as ever. The consumer remains in decent shape."

A: I would have to list two: continued strong investment performance and client retention. These certainly go hand in hand. We couldn’t be more proud about how our strategies have performed and are so appreciative of our cherished client base.

Q: What do you see as the odds of a recession between now and the end of 2024?

A: It’s so difficult to predict, but we don’t place a high probability on it. Our view that rates will stay higher for longer is, in part, based on our view that the macro picture looks resilient. The labor market is as strong as ever. The consumer remains in decent shape. In Europe, the macro picture has improved substantially and geopolitical risks have eased. So growth will undoubtedly slow as high interest rates restrict investment, but we don’t envision a hard landing.

Q: We have the new KCI up and running; what do you believe is the Next Big Thing we should pursue in the Kansas City region?

A: Last year we talked about breaking ground on our new downtown stadium for the Kansas City Current. Nearly one year later, the first purpose built stadium in the world for a women’s professional sports team is almost complete. Next on the list is the exciting mixed-use development project we are doing immediately adjacent to the stadium along with PortKC. This is such a huge win for the city on so many fronts, and we can’t wait for all of it to come together.

Q: Speaking of KCI: Have you used it yet? If so, what are your early impressions?

A: Absolutely. It’s fantastic. I love the focus on local companies and the continued easy access when departing KC. I also love seeing the KC Current branding throughout.

Q: Did you have a key mentor on your way to leadership? If so, who was it, and what was the most important thing you learned from him or her?

A: I have been blessed with who-luck in that I have had so many mentors and people who have impacted my life.

Q: What’s first on your reading list each morning?

A: Palmer Square’s trade report is always a key focus of mine each morning.

Q: What is the most essential skill you look for in leadership-level hires?

A: Prior success in athletics.

Q: If you could start a charity, what would the mission be?

A: At the Kansas City Current, we have three main community pillars; The Power of Sport for All;  Inspiring Bold Ambitio; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Q: What’s your current employee headcount?

A: Across our two main businesses, we have almost 175.

Q: Over the coming year, do you plan to add/reduce staff or hold at current levels?

A: Given the growth we see, we will be adding.
