Proposed Urban Outfitters distribution center in Kansas draws closer to construction

Officials with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan. met on Monday to continue discussion on a multi-million-dollar distribution center for the fashion retailer, which hopes to make Kansas City the main center of its nationwide network.

Urban Outfitters is seeking industrial revenue bonds – about $403 million – to build a new distribution center on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan. met on Monday to further discuss Urban Outfitters’ hopeful new build, members of the Economic Development & Finance Committee recommending approval of incentives for the facility.

The fashion retailer sought out several locations for the new facility, eventually narrowing in on the Kansas City region on a 60+ acres owned by Kansas Speedway.

Final approval from the Unified Government could possibly take place in late October, Urban Outfitters saying the revenue bonds will help toward construction plans for a 880,254-square-foot distribution center that would make the company a long-term partner in the community.

If it passes final approval, the center will support an estimated 985 full-time and 739 part-time jobs over a five-year period, Kansas having already agreed to a Job Creation Fund Program with the company.
