Platform Fuels hires former Ferrellgas CEO

By Madison Parry

Steve Wambold has been appointed CEO of Platform Fuels following nearly 20 years at Ferrellgas and three at Team Drive-Away. The position will return Wambold to a familiar place in the propane industry, which Platform Fuels entered in 2020.

Former CEO of Ferrellgas LP and CEO of Team Drive-Away, Steve Wambold, is leaving to become CEO at Platform Fuels.

Wambold served as CEO at Ferrellgas from 2009 to 2016, putting in a total of 20 years with the Overland Park-based company. Most recently, Wambold served as CEO at Team Drive-Away from 2017 to 2020.

The long-time Kansas City resident will be leaving the region to return to familiar territory in the propane businesses.

Just last year in 2020, Platform Fuels entered the propane industry after acquiring six family-owned businesses in Oklahoma.

“Steve’s experience and relationships in the propane space are unrivaled. We couldn’t ask for a more seasoned professional to lead our team forward,” Platform Fuels partner, Jake Walker, said.

At Ferrellgas, Wambold served in a number of roles from district manager, to COO to president before attaining the role of CEO. At Team Drive-Away, he led the company through a sale to United Road Services.

“I’m delighted to join the board of Platform Fuels,” Wambold said. “Platform has entered the propane space very strategically, with a singular focus on the future of the propane industry, and I am quite optimistic about the future of this company and the independent propane marketers it serves. I very much look forward to working with potential sellers personally and developing customized exit strategies and purchase agreements around their individual needs and goals.”
