The City Council announced it has approved a $300 million funding package for the Parade Park Homes redevelopment.

The project will revitalize the community near 18th and Vine into a mixed-income neighborhood with over 1,000 affordable homes comprised of senior-accessible and family homes. Last year, the City of Kansas City purchased the historic housing complex in a foreclosure sale.

Redevelopment work is slated to begin this summer.

The City Council alongside Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Third District at-Large Councilwoman Melissa Patterson Hazley and Third District Councilwoman Melissa Robinson celebrated the announcement in a press release.

“Parade Park Homes represents both Kansas City’s heritage and our future–and I am proud and honored to be the mayor privileged to ensure this historically Black neighborhood will be strong for generations to come,” Lucas said in the release. “Today’s Council approval ensures Kansas City will continue to honor Parade Park’s legacy while also creating modern, affordable housing that keeps this community intact and thriving.”

The funding plan also includes the establishment of a dedicated Parade Park Homes Future Fund, a mechanism designed to sustain ongoing development and community support in subsequent phases.

Built in 1963, Parade Park Homes was one of the first Black-owned housing co-ops in the United States. Former residents have been given the right to return to the complex following construction work, according to the release.
