Overland Park Regional Medical Center is requesting $60 million in bonds for the construction and development of an expansion to its campus, which was previously approved in 2012.

Overland Park Regional Medical Center is seeking economic development revenue bonds for a two-phase expansion of its hospital located at 10500 Quivira Road. In February 2012, the Overland Park City Council approved an expansion for the hospital that included a tower, several surgical units, a relocated helipad and more. A final development plan was then approved in May 2012.

The hospital is requesting $60 million in bonds to help cover the construction of a new building, existing building renovations and equipment costs. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $120 million. The Overland Park Finance, Administration and Economic Development Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to review the bond request.

Some parts of the development have already been completed since initial approval, including the first three stories of the medical tower and additional surgical units.

The first phase of the expansion would include a new single-story building for the existing surgery department and basement area. A new roof penthouse is also a part of the first phase, which would encompass three large operating rooms, one used for neurosurgery and the other two used for orthopedic procedures. A fourth operating room within the existing building will receive new surgical equipment and all other rooms will also receive renovations.

The overall expansion is approximately 9,000 square feet of new construction and 10,000 square feet of major remodeling, according to city documents. Medical, electrical and plumbing facilities will also receive upgrades.

The second phase of the development aims to address demand for a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and medical-surgical bed capacity. Overland Park Regional Medical Center plans to build a two-story vertical expansion for the existing medical tower.

The NICU will convert 12 existing medical-surgical rooms into 11 NICU rooms, in addition to existing offices and parent-infant rooms, which will also be converted into four NICU rooms. The planned fourth floor of the tower will house 32 beds and feature trauma elevators extending to the roof. The new fifth floor of the tower will be used for shell space to accommodate the new beds.

The second phase includes roughly 65,000 square feet of new construction and 30,000 square feet of remodeling, improvements and upgrades.

If the bonds are approved, Overland Park Regional Medical Center hopes to begin construction soon. The hospital expects construction for the first phase to begin in June 2025 and last through December 2027. The second phase is predicted to last from 2027 to 2030.

In its application, Overland Park Regional Medical Center expects the expansion to help retain and grow its base of over 600 physicians and enhance the City’s job market with new positions anticipated to have average annual wages of $88,000.

The Overland Park Finance, Administration and Economic Development Committee passed the motion with a 5 to 1 vote at Wednesday’s meeting.
