The Olathe City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on Tuesday, February 3, concerning the city’s proposed STAR bonds for the new Kansas City Chiefs headquarters facility.
As part of the Chiefs’ move to Kansas, a new $3 billion, state-of-the-art domed stadium would be built to facilitate the team’s transition to the state. Additionally, the new Chiefs headquarters and training facility are estimated to cost approximately $300 million and will be built in Olathe.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Olathe City Council members will vote on the use of 3 tax pledges that will be used to repay the STAR bonds, which include:
The outlined pledges would exist for 30 years, according to City documents.
The official site of the practice and headquarters facility has not been announced or confirmed, but Olathe City documents show a potential site for the development would be at the northwest corner of S Ridgeview Rd & College Blvd.
On Tuesday night, the Olathe City Council unanimously voted to approve its local sales tax ordinance that will be used to repay the STAR bonds for the Chiefs’ Olathe-based facilities. City council members confirmed the new Chiefs headquarters and practice facilities would be located at the northwest corner of College Boulevard and Ridgeview Road, south of Kansas Highway 10.
The STAR Bond agreement is conditional in that the Chiefs’ facilities are built within the proposed Base Revenue Area, and the bonds must be issued to the City of Oathe by December 31, 2030.
The Kansas City Chiefs released the following statement after the vote:
“We want to thank Mayor John Bacon and the entire Olathe City Council for engaging the community in a public hearing and subsequently approving Ordinance No. 26-06 in support of the STAR bond project for a new Kansas City Chiefs practice facility and team headquarters in Olathe. We also thank the members of the public who took the time to attend and contribute to the public forum. While there is much work still to come, we recognize the level of excitement in Olathe about this project, and that excitement is matched throughout the Chiefs organization. We look forward to building on this partnership.”
