Coping with COVID: Numbers on the rise as Missouri surpasses 1,000

Missouri’s COVID-19 death toll continues to increase after a resurgence in recent weeks, adding 500 new cases.

As of Tuesday, updated numbers from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services show that the state now sits at 1,015 deaths since the start of the pandemic and 21,551 confirmed cases.

New numbers show that the death toll raised by 17 and added more than 500 confirmed cases to the statewide total.

“That’s 1,000 people that lost their lives due to COVID-19,” Gov. Mike Parson said Tuesday during a news briefing. “I think we all need to remember that.”

Parson also said he does not plan on issuing a statewide mask requirement, but did emphasize the need to wash hands, socially distance and wear masks when needed.

The number of confirmed cases has quickly increased since the state reopened for business on June 16, swelling by 10.9% in just the last seven days, reports the Associated Press.

Across the state, cities and counties have begun implementing mask policies and universities planning on reopening in the fall have adjusted requirements for students returning to campus.

While there are no statewide rules on social distancing currently in place in the state, Missouri’s health department Director Randall Williams has urged people to continue hand-washing and social distancing or wearing masks, especially on July 4, reports the Associated Press.

“Going into this weekend, even if you’re outside, we really, really would encourage you to practice social distancing,” Williams said.
