No fans, tailgating at KU fall sports games

For the start of the fall sports season, the University of Kansas has announced that no fans will be allowed entrance into games, at least for the first home football game, a decision which includes a ban on tailgating.

In a Monday announcement, KU said it will not be allowing fans into fall sports games, at least for the start of the season.

Along with the note on fans, the university announced that it will also be prohibiting tailgating, a decision that will last through at least the first home football game of the season, scheduled for Sept. 12.

“Today I am writing to let you know that, at the advice of the Pandemic Medical Advisory Team, we will begin our fall athletics season without fans in attendance,” Chancellor Douglas Girod said in a Monday letter. “We know this is disappointing to those of you who planned to be on campus to root for the Jayhawks.”

While the decision will most heavily impact fans hoping to attend university football games, the call will affect other fall sports including volleyball, soccer and cross country.

Although the no-fan, no-tailgating rule remains in place for now, KU said it hopes to allow fans in to the second home football game on Oct. 3.
