NKC Health has opened a new interventional radiology suite to support urgent procedures and drive more collaboration within the hospital.
The new expansion increases NKC Health’s interventional radiology (IR) capacity to two dedicated IR suites in addition to a new multipurpose room and two ultrasound rooms.
IR uses imaging technology such as CT, live X-ray and ultrasound to guide minimally invasive procedures. Procedures that will benefit from this expansion include image-guided biopsies, port placements, tumor ablations and interventions to control internal bleeding, according to a release.
“As an independent health system, we have the ability to respond quickly to the needs of our patients and community,” Dr. Stephen Reintjes Sr., president and CEO of NKC Health, said in the release. “This expansion reflects our commitment to innovation, collaboration and delivering the advanced care our region needs — right here at NKC Health.”
The suite is designed to encourage collaboration between specialty practices in the health system such as radiology, cardiology, oncology and gastroenterology. Room turnovers could be completed in 10 minutes, allowing for faster care.
The expansion first opened in late May. NKC Health’s IR Supervisor Dan Schreiber said the program has seen growth thanks to the health system’s teams.
“The program has grown tremendously,” Schreiber said in the release. “Now we have the environment to match that growth. And it takes all of us — clinicians, physicians, analysts, schedulers, environmental services, information technology team members, executive assistants and more — to deliver the safe, reliable care our patients count on.”
In June, NKC Health and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City entered into a new agreement ensuring Blue KC members have access to NKC Health facilities and providers.
