New distribution center for Urban Outfitters’ Inc. to bring 2,000 new jobs to Wyandotte County



Once built, the distribution center is expected to serve as a “logistics node” for the global company, bringing in new jobs along with $350 million in capital investment to the community.

More development is expected to land in the area, Urban Outfitters’ Inc. making plans to build a new 880,000 sq. ft. multi-channel distribution center in Wyandotte County, Kan.

On Wednesday, Mayor and CEO David Alvey of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan. along with Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced the company’s plans, the fulfillment center set to bring nearly 2,000 new jobs and $350 million in capital investment to the community, according to a Wednesday news release from the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Kansas.

Groundbreaking for the distribution center is expected to start in the fall, operations anticipated to be up and running in early 2022, the release said.

“We are excited to partner with URBN on this long-term investment in Wyandotte County, creating thousands of new jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in capital investment in our community,” Alvey said. “Today’s announcement reinforces all that our community offers, including a skilled diverse workforce, centralized geographic location, and a robust infrastructure/transit system. It also reaffirms Wyandotte County’s continued success in attracting national development and jobs to the Kansas City region.”

The new distribution center will be located on land owned by the Kansas Speedway.

The company has revealed they hope to hire 35% of their workforce from Wyandotte County and plan to create a workforce partnership with the Kansas City, Kansas Community College.

“While our region continues to feel the economic/financial impact of COVID, it is new investment and economic development efforts like this that will allow us to provide more resources to our neighborhoods by creating new jobs, additional revenue, and future growth,” Alvey said.
