The National Insurance Producer Registry chief executive officer, Karen Stakem Hornig, will retire in June 2027.
Hornig will have served over 12 years in her position as CEO of the Kansas City-based National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). The organization also announced that Eric Saul, the chief product and technology officer, will succeed Hornig, according to a release.
“This leadership transition is the result of intentional planning by the Board and reflects NIPR’s commitment to long-term stability and governance best practices. I am proud of the organization we have built and confident that NIPR is entering its next chapter from a position of strength,” Hornig said in a release.
Following a multi-year, Board-led succession planning process, Saul was selected for the role of CEO. He has served in his current role at NIPR for three years. He began his tenure at the organization in 2020, joining as the chief technology officer.
“Under Karen’s leadership, NIPR has grown into a mature organization with a clear strategy and exceptional people. I step into this role with deep respect for what has been built and a strong commitment to continuity,” Saul said in the release.
Beginning her tenure with NIPR in 2014, Hornig previously served as the Deputy Commissioner for the Maryland Insurance Administration for over six years. Additionally, she served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland School of Law, Chief Legal Counsel at the Baltimore Police Department and as the Chief Solicitor for the City of Baltimore, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Founded in 1996, NIPR is an affiliate of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The organization is governed by a Board of Directors representing state insurance regulators and members of the insurance industry. Earlier this month, the NAIC announced that Jeffrey Johnston has been named its next CEO. Johnston has been serving as interim CEO since October 2025.
