Merriam Planning Commission Approves Next Step for Cinemark Renovation

Posted January 4, 2024

The Merriam Planning Commission voted to approve the remodel design proposed by Cinemark Theaters, which will see the addition of new entertainment venues to the Kansas City, Kansas theater.

The planning commission meeting took place Wednesday where commission members unanimously voted to approve the proposed plans to renovate the theater located at 5500 Antioch Drive.

Cinemark wants to remove nine theaters from the east side of the building and turn the space into an entertainment center that would include areas for laser tag, an 18-lane bowling alley, an arcade and introduce a restaurant and bar area to the renovated lobby. The complex will also be renamed to Gamescape by Cinemark.

The decision to approach a new business model for theater stems from poor attendance levels in the aftermath of the pandemic and that this new business model is an opportunity to adapt to a challenging landscape, according to Cinemark.

The west side of the building will remain untouched and support ten movie screens.

While the planning commission has accepted the proposal, the Merriam City Council must give final approval. The next  Merriam City Council meeting is scheduled for Jan. 8.
