Liberty Hospital has revealed the incident that ignited the communications systems outage for the healthcare provider, causing the transport and relocation of patients to other healthcare facilities was caused by a cyber attack.

On Dec. 19 around 7 a.m., Liberty Hospital took notice of the security breach and subsequently shut down its computer system shortly after.

Then the hospital began relocating its urgent care patients to other nearby facilities while the hospital’s IT team worked to identify the problem.

On Dec. 28, the Liberty Hospital IT team with the aid of a third party identified computer systems disruption was determined to be a cybersecurity incident, according to a notice from the hospital.

Further details on the attack were not released and a definitive timeline for full computer system recovery is not known.

“Across the metro area, hospitals are at- or over-capacity, and we are doing our part to provide healthcare for sick patients as we are safely able to do so,” according to a release from the hospital.
