KS House Speaker Eyes KU’s China Student Program

The University of Kansas program for mainland Chinese students to enroll in four year degrees was unanimously approved Wednesday by the Kansas Board of Regents.

Following the announcement of the University of Kansas’ new program offering four-year degrees to students attending partnering schools in mainland China, Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins claimed the program required a “closer look” from the legislature.

Hawkins’s comment on the program came the day after the university said the KU School of Education and Human Services plans to offer degrees at Zhejiang Normal University in Jinhua (ZJNU).

During a Kansas Board of Regents meeting held Wednesday, KU School of Education dean Rick Ginsberg said the implementation of this program would notably increase the university’s bottom line and furthermore reinforce relations with universities within China

Beginning in the 2024 fall semester, this program would see students of ZJNU enroll in undergraduate programs for elementary education, a master’s program in special education, a master’s program in curriculum and instruction and a master’s program in educational psychology and research.

In addition, ZJNU students would pay the non-resident tuition rate of $14,706 for KU undergraduate students and $13,117 for graduate students.
