KU Medical Center’s Executive Vice Chancellor Steps Down



Dr. Robert Simari, executive vice chancellor of The University of Kansas Medical Center will be stepping down from his role and retiring June 30, 2024.

The executive vice chancellor of The University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Robert Simari, announced he will be stepping down from his role after six years of service.

Simari will be retiring from the University of Kansas on June 30, according to a release from the office of KU chancellor Douglas Girod. Simari will step down from his leadership role immediately but will remain in his faculty role as the Franklin E. Murphy Professor of Cardiology until his retirement later this year. Simari is a 1986 alumnus of the KU School of Medicine.

Dr. Matthias Salathe, vice chancellor for research at KU Medical Center, will serve as interim executive vice chancellor, according to the release.

During his time at KU Medical Center, Simari served as executive dean of the School of Medicine for more than five years before taking on the role of executive vice chancellor on January 1, 2018. Simari was responsible for hiring deans of the schools of Medicine and Nursing, helping the KU Cancer Center earn designation from the National Cancer Institute, leading a workforce and enhancing KU Med’s status as one of the nation’s top research institutions.
