KCI Interim Upgrades on the Way Soon

Lower lounge in Terminal A

Aviation Director Pat Klein told the City Council Airport Committee last week that upgrades to the passenger experience, including improved Wi-Fi service and better seating in the terminals, is on its way soon.

Klein’s announcement came a few weeks after Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James abandoned his years-long push for a complete replacement of the 44-year-old, three-terminal airport with a new, single-terminal design.

Klein told the committee that the airport would install faster Wi-Fi service with better coverage by October and improved lighting by the end of January. A new cellphone parking lot near the airport tower is expected to be completed and ready for use within 60 days. The other upgrades have no firm timetables for completion, but include:

  • The addition of 700 seats with electrical power outlets in the public areas of Terminals B and C.
  • New Smart City media kiosks.
  • Improved signage directing passengers to hotels and transportation.
  • A new gate and checkpoint area in Terminal C, primarily for American Airlines and the smaller carriers Frontier, Spirit and Allegiant. The cost of that upgrade is estimated at $5 million and is expected to be split between the Aviation Department and the airlines.
