KC Approves $185M in Public Financing for CPKC Stadium Expansion

The Kansas City Council has approved up to $185 million in public financing for an expansion project at CPKC Stadium.

The stadium expansion would bring the total number of seats from 11,500 to 18,000. The $185 million that Kansas City has committed will also go toward funding infrastructure improvements.

The expansion project is part of the larger Current Landing, a $1.4 billion mixed-use development outside CPKC Stadium. Another $50 million will go toward a parking project that would add no fewer than 1,500 parking stalls to support Current Landing transient parking needs.

During their meeting, the council also approved $150,000 for the purpose of a financial feasibility study.

The Current said it plans to begin construction in phases. Phase 1 will include 50% of stadium project bowl improvements, with construction to begin by December 31, 2028, and completed by December 31, 2030, according to city documents. Phase 2 would include the remaining 50% of the stadium project bowl improvements, beginning by December 31, 2029, and completed by December 31, 2031.

The parking project will begin sometime in 2028, with completion in 2029.

Additional phases and their respective dates for other aspects of the development will be determined in the future, according to city documents.
