Registered nurses at two Kansas Ascension hospitals will hold one-day strikes on Wednesday, December 6 to protest unsafe conditions.

Nurses at Ascension via Christi St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita and Ascension via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita gave notice to management they will be proceeding with a one-day strike, according to National Nurses United (NNU).

NNU is a union that represents around 900 registered nurses at the two Wichita hospitals.

The Wichita hospitals have been in contract negotiations since February with reasons for striking including equipment and staffing issues. A ‘floating’ policy held at the two Wichita hospitals results in nurses being assigned to units where they do not usually work and may not have the training or expertise to care for those patients, according to NNU.

In addition to the Wichita-based hospitals, nurses from Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas will also be conducting a one-day strike on the same day.

Approximately 2,000 nurses will take part in the strike.
