Kansas City metro schools return to studies Tuesday

Whether in-person or virtual, most K-12 schools in the metro have resumed classwork today on both sides of state line following independent ruling from school district officials to push back the first day of school to after Labor Day.

The highly-anticipated return to class has now arrived for the majority of K-12 public schools in both Kansas and Missouri, though some have decided to begin virtually.

Several school districts in the Kansas City metro opted to resume studies post-Labor Day, a decision that was left up to each individual district.

Other districts, however, have already made a return to class back in August including Independence, Raymore-Peculiar and Spring Hill school districts, among others.

Ruling on when to begin classes was left up to each school district in Missouri as well as in Kansas following a down-vote on an executive order from Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, which pushed for a delayed back-to-school date after Labor Day.

A majority of districts are making their return today, on the Missouri side Liberty, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Lone Jack, Oak Grove and North Platte among those who begin today.

On the Kansas side of the metro, Olathe, Gardner-Edgerton, Shawnee Mission and De Soto districts are starting the fall semester.

The start of class varies widely across the metro, some students beginning in-person, some 100 percent virtually and yet others on a hybrid schedule.

One common practice holding for all districts, however, is a higher level of sanitation, wearing of masks and social distancing, all made mandatory in Kansas under an executive order.
