On Monday, organizers of the Garmin Kansas City Marathon announced the cancellation of this year’s event due to COVID-19 but say racers can still participate through the “Million Mile Challenge.”

Yet another local annual event has been canceled, on Monday organizers of the Garmin Kansas City Marathon announcing the cancellation of this year’s marathon due to COVID-19 concerns.

“Out of concern for the safety of race participants, partners, staff and volunteers, organizers of the Garmin Kansas City Marathon have made the difficult decision to cancel the race scheduled for Oct. 17,” the marathon’s website said.

Despite the cancellation, organizers added that racers who had intended on participating can still do so through the “Million Mile Challenge.”

Through the “Million Mile Challenge,” registrants can log their miles and are encouraged to complete the race distance, the money going toward local charities.

Up until Oct. 17, participants can track their miles to complete a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or full marathon.

Registrants also have the option of holding their spot for the 2021 marathon at no extra cost.
