Jackson County’s task force responsible for the future of the Truman Sports Complex has presented its first concept for the area.
Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota and his team published a detailed concept plan for the complex after the Chiefs and Royals teams officially move out of the area. The task force was established in March, made up of approximately 15 members, including developers, business leaders and community stakeholders.
The plans feature new additions, including a sports and innovation district as well as an entertainment district, a new hotel and convention center, housing and a transit hub with future rail connections. Kauffman Stadium would be demolished to make room for new developments.
Those new features would complement Arrowhead, which would anchor the 400-acre destination. The stadium will continue to host major sporting events and concerts. The task force proposed the potential to host opportunities for NCAA Division I Football, the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the men’s Rugby World Cup. Another concept for Arrowhead would be to transform the stadium to accommodate an F1 race circuit.
The redevelopment of the Truman Sports Complex would be completed in phases, according to the task force’s outline.
Guiding principles moving forward will be to ensure no long-term vacancy, year-round activity, multiple uses and tenants, substantial private investment, measurable public benefit, community participation and financial transparency.
“Arrowhead has history, identity and value,” LeVota said in a release. “We shouldn’t wait until facilities are empty and hundreds of acres are sitting underused to start asking what comes next. The time to start that conversation is now.”
The task force said these concepts are not a final development plan.
