As part of a restructuring initiative, Great Southern Bank will close nine banks, including two in the Kansas City area.

Great Southern Bank announced it would be permanently reducing its workforce beginning on September 25, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act document.

The restructuring will result in the closing of two locations in the Kansas City metro, 15315 W. 135th St. in Olathe and 150 SE Todd George Parkway in Lee’s Summit. According to the WARN filing, 7 positions will be affected at these two locations: 4 positions at Olathe and 3 positions at Lee’s Summit.

By October 1, nine banks will be closed across Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, and Iowa. In total, 66 jobs will be eliminated.

The bank closures and layoffs will roll out in three waves: September 25, 8 positions; September 30, 24 positions; and October 1, 34 positions.

Great Southern Bank currently operates 112 office locations with around 900 employees. As of April 24, 2026, the bank operated with $5.69 billion in assets. Great Southern Bank is a subsidiary of Great Southern Bancorp Inc., headquartered in Springfield.

Update

The decision to restructure the bank comes from the continued growth of Great Southern Bank’s Live Teller ATM network, which saw its first installations in the Des Moines, Iowa, market, a spokesperson said in an email to Ingram’s Magazine. The adoption of this technology, coupled with the improvements to its online banking platform and the remodeling efforts to its Indian Hills branch in Sioux City, reflects the bank’s decision to restructure.

The spokesperson continued:

As a result of this review, we have also made the operational decision to close nine banking centers across Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri, and eliminate a total of 66 positions across various company divisions. Decisions that affect our people are never easy, and Great Southern is committed to supporting affected associates by offering comprehensive severance packages, transition services, and opportunities to apply for open roles within the organization. Affected banking centers will close Sept. 25 and Oct. 1; all other staff positions have an effective date of Sept. 30.
