Federal agents begin exit as Operation LeGend winds down

As the Kansas City-based federal operation begins to wane in the metro, federal law enforcement agents have already begun making a return home, though officials have not declared a formal end to efforts as some federal agents remain.

Kansas City-based Operation LeGend gained large momentum over the summer, gaining federal support for its efforts to reduce violent crime, and spreading to eight other cities in the country.

As the operation winds down, federal agents brought into the Kansas City metro have already begun a return home, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri’s office.

Despite the exit of agents from the metro, an official end to the operation has not been declared as some federal law enforcement agents remain.

Launched in early July following the death of 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro from Kansas City who was shot and killed in his sleep, the murder of Taliferro helped spur a federal initiative aimed at finding violent criminals in cities experiencing an increase in murders and crime.

Around 200 agents the Department of Justice were deployed to Kansas City, Mo., though most have now returned to their home districts, according to the local U.S. Attorney’s Office.

As of Sept. 9, the Department of Justice announced that over 2,000 arrests were made nationwide and 113 charged in federal court in the metro alone.
