DFA 2020 sales up $2B from previous year

A financial report from the Kansas City area’s top private company shows that despite a tumultuous 2020, Dairy Farmers of America had net sales up $2 billion from 2019. The last year brought in $17.8 billion in sales for the cooperative, while net income for the year came in at $170.6 million.

Kansas City’s largest private company, Dairy Famers of America (DFA), emerged from a difficult 2020 even larger. DFA reported an increase in sales and profits for the previous year, according to a news release on its website.

Dairy Farmers of America Inc. is a national milk marketing cooperative in the United States. It is owned by and serves more than 13,000 dairy farmer-members representing more than 7,500 dairy farms in 47 states.

The company reported net sales of $17.8 billion in 2020, up $2 billion from the previous year. Net income for the dairy cooperative totaled $170.6 million last year, more than double 2019’s net income of $83.2 million.

Its growth came primarily from a purchase of the bulk of assets from Dallas-based dairy giant Dean Foods. DFA paid $433 million in a bankruptcy auction for 43 Dean properties handling fluid or frozen dairy products. The purchase closed in May.

DFA is also noted as one of the largest cooperatives in the U.S. DFA said it directed the marketing of 63.2 billion pounds of milk from members and others last year — about 28 percent of total U.S. milk production. It distributed $46 million to its members.
