The City of De Soto Planning Commission will review a permit request on Tuesday, which could allow for the construction of a new concrete and cement plant near the imminent Panasonic building.

Last week, Geiger Ready-Mix Co. submitted a request to rezone 38 acres of a 76-acre tract at 10680 Evening Star Road for a new branch. The City Council voted to approve the rezoning on March 20 and is awaiting recommendations from the Planning Commission for final action.

The site is south of the Panasonic electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant, located at Astra Enterprise Park—formerly the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant—and is targeting a first-quarter 2025 opening.

The site plan application proposes an 8,400-square-foot facility, wash rack area, material storage, 24 large truck stalls and a 6,800-square-foot office and 6,500-square-foot maintenance area with three bays.

The plant would generate 15-20 full-time jobs and an initial construction investment of $15 million, according to city documents. Hours of operation would be 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 5 a.m. to noon.

Geiger Ready-Mix is a locally and family-owned 133-year-old company that currently operates locations in Kansas City, Kansas; Liberty; Lee’s Summit; Olathe and Leavenworth.
