COVID-Driven Cost Cuts Hit Stormont Vail Salaries

By Dennis Boone

Robert Kenagy, CEO of Stormont Vail Health, has issued a note to employees regarding salary cuts at one of the region’s largest medical centers while it copes with the costs of fighting the COVID-19 virus. In an email sent Tuesday evening, Kenagy said that “Our goal is to preserve our team. When sacrifice is required, we have vowed to share it equitably.”

Effective next week, he said, the health system would adopt “a workforce plan that makes every effort to provide a paycheck for all team members.  We will review it every 30 days, knowing that the impact of the pandemic will be continuing for many months.”

Under that plan, staff members who are in essential face to face patient care roles working in acute care and ambulatory settings will have no salary change.  All other team members will take a decrease in base pay rate:

o   CEO – 35%

o   Senior Vice President – 25%

o   Vice President– 20%

o   Administrative Director/Director – 15%

o   All staff continuing to work onsite in non-patient facing roles or at home – 10%

o   Team members on no work requirement administrative leave – 50%.

Kenagy said no team member’s base rate will drop below the Wellpower Wage of $12.45 per hour, and that physicians and advanced practice clinicians will experience comparable decreases in compensation.
