Coping with COVID: Seven-day average for new cases shows small decline across Kansas City

Over the last couple weeks, the Kansas City area has reported a slight downward trend in the number of new COVID-19 cases, particularly on the Kansas side of the metro.

The current seven-day average for new COVID-19 cases in the Kansas City area is 361.

As of one week ago, the average was 497 and two weeks ago it was 438.

These numbers are showing a slight downward trend in the metro, particularly on the Kansas side where health officials credit the use of masks.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Lee Norman said last week that Kansas counties requiring masks have begun to see a decline in the number of new cases.

In Kansas City, Mo., Director of the Kansas City Health Department Rex Archer has said that because of the city’s mask mandate, which went into effect in late June, that the health department is also noticing a decline.

“I don’t think there’s any question that it’s slowing down the disease,” Archer said.

Archer said it will likely be extended next week and officials are considering requiring masks be worn outside.
