Coping with COVID: Pfizer to produce antiviral COVID-19 drug in Kansas plant

The Pfizer manufacturing plant located in McPherson, Kan. has agreed to produce remdesivir, a drug used to treat COVID-19 and created by Gilead Sciences Inc.

Remdesivir, a drug used to treat COVID-19 and currently in short supply, is soon to be produced in a Kansas Pfizer plant.

Pfizer made an agreement on Friday last week to produce the drug in its McPherson, Kan. manufacturing plant.

The drug comes from Gilead Sciences Inc., who created the antiviral drug after receiving emergency authorization by the Food and Drug Administration.

While shown to be an effective treatment for COVID-19 patients, the drug is being rationed among hospitals due to its short supply.

Plans to produce the drug at Pfizer in Kansas are expected to help alleviate the shortage problem, allowing more than just COVID-19 patients deemed with serious cases to have access to the drug.
