Coping with COVID: Database error on Missouri COVID-19 dashboard causes inaccurate update

Over the weekend a database error on Missouri’s new Show Me Strong COVID-19 Public Health Dashboard resulted in an incorrect inflation to the number of new cases reported on Saturday, the inaccurate update corrected on Sunday as data continues to be transferred to the new dashboard.

A database error on Missouri’s COVID-19 dashboard resulted in an “incorrect inflation” of cases and the appearance of more than 5,000 coronavirus cases being reported in a 24-hour time span, according to the Department of Health and Senior Services.

The error occurred Saturday, according to a news release, and was “an incorrect inflation of the number of reported cases going back over several days.”

DHSS Director Dr. Williams said in the release that the department is committed to “continually improving” its practices.

“When this issue was initially raised Saturday morning, the dashboard team began working through the data to identify the problem and are working through the weekend to correct the underlying issue,” Williams said. “Missourians should feel confident that we appreciate their feedback and continue to adapt our processes to ensure effective and accountable reporting to our citizens.”

Despite the technical issue at the state level, all new cases continue to be reported to local agencies “in a timely fashion,” according to the release.
