A new analysis from the Associated General Contractors of America shows construction jobs have increased in 234 metropolitan cities, including Kansas City.
Construction employment increased in 234, or 65 percent, of 358 metro areas between November 2023 and November 2024, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America.
“Although nearly two-thirds of metro areas have added construction workers in the past year, contractors report struggling to fill many hourly craft positions,” AGC chief economist, Ken Simonson, said.
In Kansas City, Missouri, mining, logging and construction jobs increased from 34,500 to 34,700, a 1% increase. Across the state line, Kansas City, Kansas raised jobs from 24,900 to 25,800, or a 4% increase.
Meanwhile, in Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas, construction jobs increased by 16,100, or 7%, between November 2023 and November 2024, the highest boost in job count in the country. Additionally, Anchorage, Alaska ranked No. 1 in the country’s highest percentage increase for construction jobs year-over-year. Between November 2023 and November 2024, Anchorage added 1,800 jobs, or 17%.
Long-time construction workers are now entering retirement age and as a result, the industry has become more dependent on immigrants to populate the workforce, Simonson said. An analysis of the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey data shows roughly one-third of construction craft workers are foreign-born.
