AMC Theatres Launches New Film Company in Leawood, Kansas

AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. announced the launch of Leawood Films, a film distribution company aimed at bringing more films to the big screen.

Leawood Films will be headquartered both in Los Angeles and at AMC Theatres’ office in Leawood, Kansas. The company will work primarily on small and medium-sized releases and focus on bringing additional movies to audiences across the globe, leveraging AMC’s network, according to a release.

The new company will not finance productions or develop scripts for movies; instead, it will act as a disciplined, low-risk opportunity for AMC aimed at working with only established and emerging filmmakers who can secure full financing for their own films or have completed their films.

“This is a modestly scaled initiative focused on taking to the big screen films that are fully financed by their filmmakers,” Adam Aron, AMC Entertainment Chairman and CEO, said in the release. “We are aiming particularly to increase the number of small and mid-budget-sized movies that get released theatrically. It is highly unlikely that Leawood Films will include blockbuster tentpole-type releases. So, our Leawood Films effort is intended to complement, not compete with, the crucial work of our longstanding existing partnerships with major studios and key distribution partners.”

Filmmakers who work with Leawood Films will maintain revenue streams after their films leave AMC theatres, and IP ownership of their product, according to a release. Leawood Films will respect its 45-day or greater Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) window and its 90-day Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) window.

Leawood Films has already worked on three distribution operations for Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour (2023) and Swift’s The Official Release Part of a Showgirl (2025), as well as Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé (2023).

Leawood Films has not selected any initial films to be released and expects its next projects to be released sometime in 2027 or 2028, according to the release.

Headquartered in Leawood, Kansas, AMC Theatres operates 660 theatres with 8,200 screens in the U.S. and approximately 1,000 theatres and more than 11,000 screens worldwide. The company was founded in 1920 and currently serves around 350 million moviegoers annually.

AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. ranked No. 4 among Top Area Public Companies ranked by gross revenue in Kansas City’s 22-county area, as featured in Ingram’s The Power Book 2026 Edition.
