$30M Northland fulfillment center to open in 2022

Liberty Commerce Center will soon see the addition of a high-tech, micro-fulfillment center for national pharmacy chain, Walgreens. The center will help expedite product delivery to retail stores and directly to customers’ homes. Plans for the 65,000-plus-square-foot facility have its completion set for fall 2022.

The Kansas City Area Development Council announced today that Walgreens has selected the greater Kansas City area for a new high-tech, micro-fulfillment center. The council says the facility will create 200 jobs and invest $30 million in Liberty, Missouri.

The development council also says the new operation will create more than $8 million in payroll. New job opportunities at the facility will include a mix of pharmacist, pharmacy technician positions, maintenance technicians, function leads and other operational roles.

Walgreens says the fulfillment center is dedicated to fulfilling prescription orders and enabling store pharmacy teams to spend more time providing front-line patient care.

The new Liberty facility will be 65,000 square feet and is planned to be open by fall 2022. The fulfillment center is one of nine being built across the country.

“Growing the industrial and manufacturing investment in Liberty, and the accompanying new job creation, has been a high priority for elected officials, city staff and the Liberty Economic Development Corporation in recent years,” said Liberty Mayor Lyndell Brenton in a news release Monday.

The development council also touted the growing commitments from fulfillment and distribution companies in the Kansas City area in the last five years. They say Kansas City has successfully attracted pledges to create more than 10,650 jobs, invest $1.9 billion and occupy 17.8 million square feet.
