17 Regional Builders Make ENR’s Top 400 List

The Show-Me State flexed its construction-sector muscles today with 14 companies from Missouri claiming their spots on the Engineering News Record’s 2017 list of the nation’s Top 400 Contractors. The highest-ranking among them was St. Louis-based McCarthy Holdings, up five spots this year to No. 20 overall. That was just ahead of JE Dunn Construction, the biggest builder based in Kansas City, which rose three spots to No. 23.

Other companies on the list included a pair of Kansas City-area firms generally known more for their engineering and design acumen than their construction prowess, but nonetheless among the top 75–Black & Veatch at No. 41, down one spot from 2016, and Burns & McDonnell at No. 73, slipping from the 55th position last year.

Kansas had two other big builders on the list: Columbus-based Crossland Construction at No. 79 and Key Construction of Wichita at No. 275. Other area companies to earn Top 400 honors included No. 124 Herzog Contracting of St. Joseph and Garney Companies of Kansas City, ranking 134th.
