Metrobloks, a data center developer, announced it is investing $1.4 billion in the City of Liberty to construct a new, state-of-the-art data center campus.
The facility will span 568,800 square feet across three buildings at Old Hughes Road and represents one of the largest capital investments ever made in Missouri, according to a Tuesday release from the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
During the Liberty City Council meeting on Monday, council members approved a $202.7 million tax abatement plan over the next 25 years for the data center. Additionally, Metrobloks announced it would enter into a $27.75 million community benefits agreement that would support the Liberty Institute for Science and Ethics over the course of 25 years.
The Metrobloks investment will bring increased tax revenues, at least 30 jobs with an average annual wage of $95,649 and hundreds of construction jobs to the Liberty area. The company’s data center features a “very low water use design” and plans to limit the resource demands that will affect nearby schools, emergency services, and municipal resources, according to the department.
“The City of Liberty is excited to partner with Metrobloks to bring the most significant digital economy project in Liberty’s history,” Liberty Mayor Greg Canuteson said in the release. “We believe this is the first step in building a high tech foundation to our city’s economy going forward.”
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Metrobloks develops data centers for the use of artificial intelligence in major metropolitan areas across North America. The company currently operates data centers in McAllen, Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Phoenix, Arizona and Miami, Florida, with another site planned in Detroit, Michigan.
