Popular Kansas City restaurant, Ponak’s Mexican Restaurant & Bar, has been sold to its general manager.

Block & Company, Inc., announced that the 6,228 square-foot restaurant property on approximately 0.70 acres was sold to Ponak’s general manager, Spencer Shaw. Ponak’s is located at 2856 Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City. Block & Company listed the property for sale in 2024.

New ownership has tentative plans for expansion in the future, according to a release. Under the new ownership, Shaw plans to operate the now 50-year-old restaurant as is and will introduce a new catering concept to expand its reach in the Kansas City market.

Founded in 1975 by John Ponak, the restaurant has earned multiple food and beverage awards and serves cuisine influenced by the Sonora region of Mexico, reflecting culinary traditions steeped in flavor and heritage.
