Atlanta-based Americold has opened its $100 million logistics facility in Kansas City, creating nearly 190 jobs in the south Kansas City area.
The 335,000-square-foot facility is located in the I-49 Logistics Center. As part of a strategic collaboration with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), Americold’s new facility will create nearly 190 new jobs for Mexico Midwest Express (MMX). CPKC’s MMX service is North America’s only single-line rail service offering for refrigerated shippers between U.S. Midwest markets and Mexico.
“This is more than infrastructure — it’s a fully integrated solution that connects food producers to consumers faster and more efficiently,” Americold CEO George Chappelle said in a Tuesday release. “By combining our cold storage capabilities and food flow expertise with CPKC’s rail network through Kansas City, we’re creating a new North American cold chain that delivers real value to our customers. Simply put, we’ve unlocked a better way to move food.”
The facility will feature on-site USDA inspections and operate with load capacities exceeding 50,000 pounds per container to reduce highway congestion. Furthermore, the site is expected to serve a 300-mile radius that will support the region’s food flow.
The Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City collaborated with Missouri Partnership, KC SmartPort, the City of Kansas City, the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Missouri One Start, Evergy, and Spire to support the project.
“Americold’s grand opening represents an exciting step forward for our transportation sector,” Director of the Department of Economic Development Michelle Hataway said in the release. “We’re excited to see how this company’s investment will create new opportunities across the state.”
Americold operates more than 230 facilities across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America. Combined, the facilities total about 1.4 billion refrigerated cubic feet company-wide.
