Where Does MO, KS Rank in Adult Mental Illness Rates?

An analysis from KFF found Missouri to be in the top ten states with the highest percentage of adults reporting mental illness.

The analysis used data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and its National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2021-2022.

Missouri ranked No. 9 on the list of states with the highest amount of adults reporting any mental illness in the past year at 26.5% (1,248,000) and adults reporting a serious mental illness at 6.4% (301,000).

Kansas ranked No. 24, tied with Indiana. The analysis showed Kansas had adults reporting any mental illness in the past year at 24.4% (532,000) and adults reporting a serious mental illness at 6.6% (143,000).

Additionally, both Missouri and Kansas were among 35 states that ranked higher than the national average. Nationwide, 23.1% (58,867,000) of adults reported having a mental illness in the past year.

  10. Colorado (26.3%)
    West Virginia (26.3%)
