The United Auto Workers union expanded its strike on Friday, adding about 5,600 workers to the 12,700 workers currently on strike, as negotiations with the Big Three; General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, continue as the strike entered its second week.
UAW workers will strike at an additional 38 locations across 20 states as of Friday, Sept. 22.
UAW President Shawn Fain took to social media to address the state of the strike. Much work with negotiations is still needed for General Motors and Stellantis, however, progress has been made at Ford, Fain said.
The negotiations with Ford include; the elimination of wage tiers, the reinstatement of a cost-of-living adjustment formula for wages, the right for workers to strike over plant closures, the expansion of profit sharing to temporary employees who have been employed for at least 90 days and conversion of all temporary workers who have been employed for 90 days.
“To be clear, we’re not done at Ford,” said Fain. “We still have serious issues to work through, but we do want to recognize that Ford is showing that they’re serious about reaching a deal; at GM and Stellantis, it’s a different story.”
