Posted December 7, 2023

The time has come to usher out and honor the dedication of both former Leawood Mayor Peggy Dunn and former Lenexa Mayor Mike Boehm.

Peggy Dunn

Dunn was elected mayor in 1997 and served as mayor for 26 years before announcing she would not seek re-election in June.

During her tenure as Leawood’s mayor, Dunn witnessed the growth of her city’s population nearly double from approximately 20,000 residents when she was elected to nearly 34,000 as of 2022.

Dunn also served two years on the Leawood City Council before being elected.

Leawood celebrates its 75th anniversary as a city this year, and with it, comes a time to close a chapter in Dunn’s life as well as usher in a new mayor for the city.

Dunn was succeeded by Leawood Mayor Elect, Marc Elkins.

Mike Boehm

Boehm has a long career in Lenexa that is traced back 32 years serving the city.

Boehm was appointed mayor in January 2003 after the previous Mayor Joan Bowman stepped down. He was then officially elected mayor in April. His service to the city began in 1991 when he was appointed to the Lenexa Planning Commission.

He too has watched his city flourish and grow in size over the years. During his time on the planning commission, the population of Lenexa was more than 34,000 and currently, the population is more than 57,000.

In Boehm’s first full year as mayor Lenexa hit an all-time high of $193 million in new yearly development. Fast forward to 2023 and that number has reached more than $500 million for the first time.

Boehm was succeeded by Lenexa Mayor Elect, Julie Sayers.
