The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) plans to delay this year’s tax filing deadline to mid-May, a similar move made in 2020 when the deadline was extended to July.
Additional time is being given to allow filers more time to navigate tax situations complicated by COVID-19, according to a report by CNN.
May 17 has been set as the new deadline date, providing an extra month for residents to file
Last year, the IRS moved the deadline to July 15, giving Americans an additional three months to file their taxes.
As of March 5, the IRS had yet to process 6.7 million of the 2020 returns that had been filed since Feb. 12, according to another report by the Associated Press.
According to the IRS, it has processed about 88 percent of the returns it received compared with 96 percent in the same time frame last year.
