Kansas City police say the shooting that took place after the conclusion of the Super Bowl rally, which led to 23 victims injured, was caused by a dispute.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Police Chief Stacey Graves and Fire Chief Ross Grundyson held a press conference Thursday to give updates about the ongoing investigation following the Super Bowl rally shooting.
“I want to stress that preliminary investigative finding has shown there was no nexus to terrorism or homegrown violent extremism,” Graves said. “This appeared to be a dispute between several people that ended in gunfire.”
Three suspects have been taken into custody. While no charges have been given at this time, the Kansas City police department has 24 hours since taking the individuals into custody before filing charges or releasing them. Two of the individuals in custody are under 18.
The victims’ age range is between 8 to 47, according to KCPD. A total of 23 people were victims of the shooting.
One individual, 43-year-old Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan, died as a result of her injuries.
Children’s Mercy reported treating 12 victims, ages 6 to 15, of the shooting, 11 of those were children and nine of those suffered gunshot wounds. Six of the children have been discharged from the hospital with three remaining. All of them are expected to make a full recovery, Children’s Mercy senior vice president and chief nursing officer Stephanie Meyer said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
University Health said its facility has treated eight gunshot victims, two of whom are in critical condition and one is in stable condition.
