Yet another announcement of a facility closure comes from Saint Luke’s, the Kansas City-headquartered health system revealing that it will be closing the Saint Luke’s South Radiation Therapy Center in Overland Park, Kan. at the end of this month.
The facility joins two other Johnson County Saint Luke centers that have closed or will be closed by Dec. 31, 2020.
In June, the health system shut down Cushing Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan. Just three short months later in October, it then announced it would be closing two of its community hospitals, one at 75th Street and Metcalf Avenue and another at 159th Street and U.S. Highway 69 in Overland Park.
It is unclear how many Saint Luke’s employees at the radiation center will be affected, though it was announced that workers will be able to apply for other open positions in the Saint Luke’s Health system.
News of the closure has shed light on the complications associated with the community hospital model; Cushing Hospital itself had converted to a community hospital model not long after its announced closure.
